For
many delegates it's not enough to wear their partisanship
on the sleeve. They wear it on the head, too. At the Democratic
National Convention on Monday night, there were classic straw
hats, brims buckling beneath the weight of campaign buttons.
There was a black straw cowboy hat with a wooden donkey on top. And there
was a replica of Lady Liberty's crown..
Each
hat told a different, and sometimes quite specific, story.
Karen
Dahl, a delegate from Viroqua, Wis., wore a black straw cowboy hat
with a red and blue stuffed frog perched on top. The frog,
she said, was a reference to Sen. John Kerry's environmental
record.
"Frogs
show the first signs of mutations for environmental degradation,"
she explained.
For
Michael Lowry, on the other hand, his orange felt hat and
matching orange outfit were simply a matter of personal taste.

"I
enjoy the color," said the delegate from Milwaukee. "Nothing
more elaborate than that."
Sometimes
a hat's political statement was very pointed.
Jerry
Martin, a delegate from Hattiesburg, Miss., wore a red, white
and blue Dr. Seuss "Cat in the Hat" style that featured flashing
donkey flags and pins. One read "Bush lied, thousands died."
Johnnie
Patton, a delegate from Jackson, Miss., was more subtle.
Her
boater hat featured a stuffed gray donkey and a Purple Heart
pin _ an allusion to Kerry's war service. And she wore matching
bronze donkey earrings.
"This
is my tired donkey," she said. "He's tired of the Bush administration."
